SURF’S UP FOR WASTE AS ART WINNER - Media ReleaseLast modified: June 10, 2008 - 9:34 AM
Raymond Terrace resident Julie Reid has jointly won the prestigious Maria Callinan Memorial Award in the Hunter’s ‘Waste as Art’ competition. Winners of the ‘Waste as Art’ competition were decided on Sunday, with entries now on exhibition until 13 July at Building no.3 Railway Workshop, Honeysuckle. Julie’s life size cardboard sculpture, entitled ‘surf’s up Elle’ is an amazing piece of art (see attached) and a very worthy winner of the award for best use of waste materials. Now in its ninth year, the Waste as Art event attracted a huge array of entrants from across the Hunter Region. All entries were judged on how effectively they addressed the ‘waste to resource’ concept, through the use of waste materials in the creation of art. Works were also judged on aesthetic merit, artistic quality, creativity, innovation and craftsmanship. The competition is an initiative of the Hunter Waste Education Group, comprising Councils of Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Newcastle, Port Stephens & Singleton and the Department of Environment and Climate Change (NSW). It is also supported by the Newcastle Regional Museum.
