Port Stephens Council Brings Community Together During Drug Action WeekPort Stephens Council, in conjunction with the ‘Community Together’ Committee, will host a hypothetical discussion forum at council chambers on 24 June as part of National Drug Action week. The hypothetical will deal with the issue of underage drinking and illicit drug taking among young people. The discussion will involve youth from across Port Stephens as well as a panel of experts from teaching, medical, police, business, council and welfare groups. Speaking today, Port Stephens Council Youth Team Leader James Campbell said he hoped the discussion forum would encourage a lively debate about what is a high profile and controversial topic. “We are going to step through a hypothetical situation where a party of under-age youths gets out of hand. What happens in those circumstances and how to prevent some of the problems that arise will be the focus of the debate,” he said. “The real experts on this topic will be the young people, they know that situations like this happen in real life. What we are looking to do is challenge some of their thinking and look at different ways to deal with certain situations.” “I think it will be a real eye-opener, not just for young people, but for parents, teachers and anyone involved with young people.” Also speaking today, Port Stephens Mayor Cr Ron Swan said the initiative was an innovative and proactive way to engage with Port Stephens youth. “Drug Action Week provides the opportunity to discuss what is a serious issue, in a manner that should provoke plenty of questions and hopefully a few answers as well,” he said.
“I’d like to commend the organisers for their approach to this topic and very much look forward to the outcomes of the discussion.” Contact details |
