Karuah residents lead the way in recycling - Media ReleaseThe residents of Mary Street Karuah have wholeheartedly embraced a Port Stephens Council initiative that aims to improve household recycling across the local government area. The program involves Council undertaking audits on resident’s recycling bins, then providing direct feedback on how they could more effectively recycle their household waste. The initiative also acknowledges residents for improvements made. During the audits carried out in April, 14 households in Mary Street had improved their recycling habits to the extent that they received individual rewards. Speaking today Port Stephens Council Waste Minimisation Officer Cathy Seberry said the program has been extremely successful in improving the quality of recycling in the area. “Previously, only 40% of households were recycling at an acceptable quality,” she said. “Now that figure has improved to a very impressive 82%.” Items accepted for recycling in household recycling bins includes glass bottles and jars, aluminium and steel cans, plastic containers, paper and cardboard. “The common mistakes we found people making were placing plastic bags and packets and green waste in the bins,” Ms Seberry said.
“With a bit of education, and forethought we can all improve the quality of recycling in our community, and work towards a more sustainable environment.” Contact details |
