Council wins with Grey Nomads - media release

Last modified: October 19, 2009 - 3:47 PM

Port Stephens Council has again been recognised for excellence in management, this time at the national Diversity@Work Awards ceremony in Melbourne.

Council received the major award for employment and inclusion of mature age workers for the highly successful ‘Grey Nomad’ Campaign it ran in 2008.

The Diversity@Work Awards recognise and reward the efforts of organisations that encourage diversity and inclusion in their workplace.

Speaking today, Human Resource Manager Michelle Gilliver-Smith said Council employs around 550 staff and attracting and retaining quality people regardless of their age.

"We aim to be an employer of choice so this award is a great result," she said.

In 2008 to address a skills shortage Council introduced an innovative recruitment program specifically aimed at retirees, aptly called the ‘Grey Nomad’ Campaign.

"From the campaign we unearthed 120 well qualified, vibrant retirees who are looking for semi-permanent, contract and casual work in our area," said Mrs Gilliver-Smith.

"They bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience that we can harness to mentor younger staff and fill temporary gaps, whilst providing worthwhile employment in our community."

At the award ceremony held last week, Council were also named as finalists for the Work/Life Balance category.

The Diversity@Work award is the second honour this year for Port Stephens Council.

In September, Council won the LGMA NSW Management Excellence award for its Workplace Enterprise Agreement.
