Cartridges are inky trouble for landfill - media release

Last modified: September 2, 2009 - 4:41 PM

Port Stephens Council is urging residents to recycle their old printer and toner cartridges this month as part of its Wicked Waste program.

Speaking today Waste Minimisation Officer Cathy Seberry said that people often underestimate the hazards of putting ink cartridges in their garbage bin. "

Apart from all the space the cartridges occupy in landfill, the toner dust and ink cartridge chemicals are toxic to the environment," she said.

"Australians discard over 18 million used printer and toner cartridges each year, which equates to 5,000 tonnes of recyclables going to landfill," Mrs Seberry said.

"Unfortunately, 80 per cent of discarded cartridges end up in landfill, so this month we’re encouraging everyone to recycle their old printer and toner cartridges," she continued.

Any kind of printer cartridge can be recycled, regardless of its make or condition.

The materials recycled can be used to remanufacture toner and printer cartridges as well as rulers and park benches.

Over nine million printer cartridges have been recycled and kept from landfills around Australia since Cartridges 4 Planet Ark started its campaign in 2003.

"Here in Port Stephens we want to continue to be the best recycling council in the Hunter and ensure all old cartridges are recycled," Mrs Seberry said.

Residents can recycle their old cartridges for free at the PlanetARK collection boxes located in following areas;

·         Port Stephens Council Admin Building

·         Aust Post, Nelson Bay 97 Magnus St

·         Aust Post, Raymond Terrace Terrace Plaza

·         Harvey Norman, Salamander Bay 207 Sandy Point Rd

·         Harvey Norman, Heatherbrae 2364 Pac Hwy

·         Leading Edge Computers, Nelson Bay 11 Yacaaba St

Printer and toner cartridges have been identified as a Wicked Waste as they should not be placed in either your garbage or recycling bin.
