Council offers rural tips - Media releaseLast modified: August 24, 2009 - 12:24 AM
Port Stephens Council is offering a unique workshop to help rural landholders make better decisions about fertilisers and soils.
The Fertiliser and Soil Improvement Workshop to be held Tuesday 25 August from 9.30 am until 1pm at Oakvale Farm and Fauna World will be run by Council’s environmental team.
Speaking today Community Support Officer Philippa Hill said the workshop will show land holders how to make the best decisions for their soil and pastures. "Excess use of fertiliser is not only unnecessary and a waste of time and money but can have a dramatic effect on the water quality of our creeks and rivers. This is why it is incredibly important to get it right," she said. The workshop will teach landholders how to; · Identify the nutrient requirements for good pasture growth · Understand why soil testing is used to determine fertiliser needs · Compare fertiliser application methods and rates "Correct fertilisation can increase your pasture production," Ms Hill said. "Local soil samples will be analysed, comparing paddock history and then used as case studies for pasture improvement." "The workshop will profile simple practices that can be used on all properties," she added. The workshop is part of a series funded by the state government’s Environmental Trust Program to improve the water quality in Tilligerry Creek. The workshop is free with lunch and morning tea provided. Bookings are essential. For more information and to book contact Philippa Hill on 4980 0279 or philippa.hill@portstephens.nsw.gov.au
