Sketchley Pioneer Cottage & MuseumLast modified: November 26, 2007 - 9:49 AM
Take a step back in time.....Walk through the original 1850's slab farm house. Sketchley Cottage is a rare timber slab colonial farm house, built in approximately 1850 on the Doribank Estate east of the Williams River, near the present New Line Road. Donated to the Raymond Terrace & District Historical Society in 1976, the cottage was moved by road to land provided by Port Stephens Council at 1 Sketchley Street. Here it has been lovingly restored by members and volunteers, opening to the public for the first time in 1979. Nine years later a Museum was built in the cottage grounds as a Bicentennial project in 1988, with further additions being made in 1994. Collection items include farm equipment and tools, a working blacksmith's shop, period clothing, household and personal items. From the late 1850's to 1970 it was the family home of William Sketchely (1810-1884) and his descendants. See furnishings and costumes of yesteryear and items found under the cottage!
Visit the museum for domestic items, hand-crafted tools, costumes and textiles, Stroll around to the working blacksmith's shop, farm equipment and wool press, model of Woodville Bridge, Granny's laundry equipment and lots more ….. Morning and afternoon teas are available. Entry Costs (children must be accompanied by an adult)
